What is an Elexon code?

A Charge code is a 13 digit number assigned to apparatus that UMS Customers wish to add to their inventories. Charge codes are used within the UMSO systems to calculate volumes of electricity consumed. If you use a piece of equipment, it must go on the inventory with a charge code.

What is the role of Elexon?

Elexon oversees the strategic operation and day-to-day management of the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC). Elexon compares how much electricity generators and suppliers say they will produce or consume with actual volumes. We work out a price for the difference and transfer funds.

Is Elexon part of National Grid?

While Elexon is wholly-owned by National Grid ESO, it's fully funded by and accountable to its customers – almost 500 signatories of the BSC (including all licensed electricity companies in Great Britain) – making it a not-for-profit service provider to industry and completely independent from our operations.

How is Elexon funded?

Elexon's costs are paid by Parties signed up to the BSC. The BSC refers to these costs as 'BSC Costs'. As we are a 'not for profit' company the amount charged exactly matches our costs for each financial year. Parties pay a proportion of the BSC costs every month - their 'BSCCo Charges'.
