What is Mohs surgery used for?

Mohs surgery is used to treat the most common skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as some kinds of melanoma and other more unusual skin cancers. Mohs surgery is especially useful for skin cancers that: Have a high risk of recurrence or that have recurred after previous treatment.

Are you awake for Mohs?

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia while you are awake. In between stages you will have a temporary bandage on, and you can sit up, talk, read and go the bathroom.

What is Mohs training?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized procedure used for removing skin cancers. A thin layer of tissue is removed and tested by the surgeon. The exact location of cancerous cells is mapped, and another layer is removed from that precise area. The process is repeated until the area tests cancer-free.

What is Mohs stage1?

The Mohs surgeon removes the visible cancer, along with a thin layer of additional tissue (Stage I). This procedure takes only a few minutes, and the patient waits while tissue is being processed and examined. The removed tissue specimen is cut into sections, stained, and marked on a detailed diagram (Mohs map).

Is Mohs surgery an acronym?

Currently, Mohs surgery, fresh-tissue technique, is the official name for this procedure, because the fixed-tissue technique is rarely used. The acronym MOHS, micrographically oriented histographic surgery, has also been proposed, but it has not achieved widespread recognition.
